Notice to ALL
Cave Divers:
Jim Stevenson, former Head of the Florida Springs Initiative,
of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection
has asked for our help.
This Spring Report Form can be filled out and submitted
WHENEVER you observe occurrences you believe to be out
of the ordinary. As examples, a die off of crayfish, an
overabundance of crayfish, differing water temperatures,
hydrogen sulfide where it has never been before, etc.
If you witness such unusual occurrences, please take
notes! Please provide the time, location (as exact as
possible, so someone else can find it), depth, duration
(did it last several days?), any samples collected, possible
causes, and most importantly a contact name, phone number,
address, and e-mail address. This is all spelled out on
the form. Your participation will help to better understand
the natural dynamics of cave ecosystems and the impact
we have on them.
A fuller understanding will be invaluable as we face
critical shortages in the water supply throughout the
state and increased demands are placed on the north Florida
aquifer system. Our efforts as a community to responsibly
participate in cave preservation will help to insure continued
access to our favorite dive sites.

One last note, Jim Stevenson is one of our BEST FRIENDS
associated with the FLDEP. It is in the best interest
of both the state and the diving community to assist him
when the need arises. Any assistance the NSS-CDS can provide
will strengthen our relationship with the state and will
be greatly appreciated by Jim.
