Chairman’s Corner

Kelly Jessop

We want to welcome three new board members that will be installed in their position at the May workshop, they are Frank Ohidy, Jeff Loflin, and Alex Varouxis. We will look forward to their support of the CDS, and the talent they bring. I wish to offer a big thank you to outgoing board members Gene Melton,Bill, Rotella, and Richard Blackburn. It has been a joy to work with them over the last few years, and they will truly be missed. When you see them at the workshop please thank them for the years of service.

Since the last UWS, the CDS has been very involved with conservation. On March 29th the CDS had a social/workday to clean the Cathedral property of vegetation, and build steps to control erosion and make access safer. Beth and Jerry Murphy on March 22nd helped organize a clean up of Alachua (Mill Creek) sink which involved people in the community. On another conservation note, the CDS pamphlet for cave conservation is getting one step closer to completion.

The NSS convention scheduled for August 11-15th in Lake City is really taking shape. This will be the first time the NSS convention has been held in Florida, and the CDS will have a big role. To start the convention off, the CDS will have a mini-workshop on August 10th with a special thanks to chair Shirley Kasser. The slate of speakers can be viewed at nsscdsworkshop.org/MiniWorkshop2008. During the NSS convention there will cave diving trips planned for the cave divers in attendance, but this is a perfect time for somebody who wants to hone their dry caving skills.
